The Woodstock North Girl’s Tennis team improved to 3-0 on the season with a win over non-conference rival Wauconda! The team had not played for several days due to inclement weather, but they were able to come together when it mattered the most to secure the team win. The win tonight marks the 24th consecutive team win for the varsity dating back to the beginning of last season. The match was played in a two singles, five doubles format according to Wauconda’s conference line-up.
The winning recap:
Sophia Ferru defeated Paiton Plucinski 6-0, 6-0 at first singles. Plucinski had to forfeit the match at the end of the first set. Before play was suspended, Ferru was able to show her dominance on court by moving her opponent from side to side and hitting heavy forehand groundstrokes for winners. Ferru looks to continue her consistently strong play in her next upcoming match.
Anika Treadway defeated Mary Eisenhardt 6-1, 6-1 at second singles. Treadway lead the way for the majority of the match and showed good confidence in her groundstrokes and ability to hit her shots in the corners. Treadway was able to move freely on court and showed a conscientious effort to move up to the net to put away points. Treadway looks to continue her winning streak against her next opponent.
Elle Lagerstrom and Marian Syed were victorious at fourth doubles and defeated Isabella DeLonker and Jessica Lange by a score of 6-1, 6-0. Lagerstrom and Syed have showed continued improvement throughout the season and tonight was one of their most dominating performances to date. Lagerstrom and Syed used effective communication and court awareness to put themselves on the offensive for a majority of the match. Lagerstrom showed great ability to keep the ball in play and away from the opposing net player, while Syed was waiting at the net to display her vastly improved net game. Great effort tonight ladies!
Ariel Pierce and Hailey O’Brien were winners at 5th doubles against Erin Smith and Justina McGuinn by a score of 6-0, 6-2. Pierce and O’Brien have taken some great strides together this season and are showing that they are a doubles pairing to contend with. Pierce was very active at the net during their match today and has shown improved volleys and court awareness. O’Brien paced the pairing from the baseline and showed a keen ability to keep the ball cross court and away from the opposing net player, as well as an ability to hit shots down the middle for winners. Congrats on your first official Varsity win ladies! Keep it up!
